Maria Scordo-Allen in New Role

After twelve years of dedicated service to the Italian American communities in Colorado and Wyoming, Maria Scordo-Allen has ended her affiliation with the Italian government as the Honorary Vice Consul of Italy. Maria announced her departure at the Italian American Forum she hosted on March 27th. Like her mother, Caterina Noya Scordo, Maria served in this official capacity, devoting untold hours assisting people as a representative of the Italian government. Colorado Italian American Heritage Month, this website, and subsequent activities associated with recognition of Italian Americans in Colorado during the month of October were all initiated by Maria's office in 2008.
Maria will continue to offer many of the same services she has been providing through a new company she is in the process of creating. She will still be available to assist with Italian citizens in Colorado and Wyoming and indicates she will continue to be very involved with the Italian community and Italian American communities. Her new website, www.italianvisas.com, outlines services to be provided on a fee basis.

Maria will maintain an office at 7325 South Jackson Street; Centennial, CO 80122. For appointments, please contact her by phone at 303.224.9927, by fax at 303.224.9930 or by e-mail. Maria will still respond to her previous e-mail at italyconsulcolo@msn.com, but the preferred business e-mail address is maria@italianvisas.com.

Chapter 4: Immigrants
Italians

Only a sprinkling of Italians settled in Denver before 1880, when the census taker found a scant 86. In the following decades the railroads, mining companies and other industries recruited Italian labor and the 1890 census listed an Italian population of 999. By 1920, their population had climbed to over 3,000 and the North Denver neighborhood of Highland became known as "Little Italy." Continued.

History on the Road
The Painted Carts of Sicily

by Marcella Croce and Moira F. Harris
Publisher: Pogo Press, 2006
Paperbound, 120 pages
Illustrations: 95
Price: $19.95

A perfect book for your coffee table. A colorful way to learn more about Sicily and its culture. An engaging read, it describes today's artisans, the ones who have a part in creating these beautiful carreti: the illustrators and painters who envision the marvelous historical and religious scenes and the sculptures who work the wood into wonderful reflections of Sicilian beliefs and stories. It describes and illustrates through photographs the uses that have been made of the carreti through the generations and those who have used them. There is even information about where you can buy them and which museums hold examples of them today.

Marcella Croce, one of the book's authors, is a lecturer, Italian language teacher, and Elderhostel coordinator. She has written many articles and books on Italian culture and Italian folklore.

Colorado Italian American License Plates

Our continued thanks go to Sammy "Gallo" Johnson for making the Italian American license plate a reality. Begun back in 2004, Sammy has worked on this project through every step. Currently, about 1,500 have been sold. Sammy has asked that we remind everyone that Colorado Motor Vehicle has set a quota of 3,000 plates to be sold by July 1, 2011, in order for printing of the plate to continue.

If 3,000 are sold, the plates will be printed on a regular basis. If not, once the original 3,000 are sold, the plate will be discontinued and those who already have them will be the only ones to get them. You do not have to wait for your current plates to expire as the new plate can be prorated. Anyone can purchase the plate for about $50 dollars, in addition to the usual costs, at all Motor Vehicle locations.
