Flight for Life Colorado
FIRST IN THE NATION
- Started in 1972, St. Anthony Hospital's Flight For Life was the first civilian hospital-based emergency medical helicopter service in the United States.
- Flight For Life has performed over 85,000 life-saving flights and currently averages 12 trips each day.
COLLABORATIONS
- Flight For Life Colorado works closely with law enforcement, fire departments, ski patrol, avalanche deployment teams, and search and rescue.
- In 1997, The Children's Transport Service of The Children's Hospital in Denver merged with Flight For Life to create the highly specialized Newborn/Young Child Team.
- Flight For Life Colorado transports patients to the most appropriate medical facility, and more patients go to The Children's Hospital than to any other facility.
TRAUMA
- Flight For Life Colorado plays a critical role in saving lives in our community. Trauma accounts for more lives lost in the United States than cancer and heart disease combined and is the leading cause of death and disability in the first four decades of life.
- The care a patient receives in the first hour after an accident may mean the difference between life and death.
- More than trauma and injuries: Flight For Life Colorado also serves critical newborns and young children and adults with medical emergencies.
MORE THAN ORANGE HELICOPTERS
Flight For Life Colorado operates:
- 4 helicopters operated by Air Methods Corporation
- 4 critical care ground ambulances
- Dedicated medical fixed wing turbo prop and Lear jet aircraft operated by Mayo Aviation
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
- As a nonprofit community asset, support from the community enables Flight For Life Colorado to continue its remarkable mission. For this reason, St. Anthony Health Foundation is dedicated to raising money to keep this valuable service available to those in need, regardless of a patient's ability to pay, and provide necessary equipment and education to crews.
